Princes Highway upgrade

Gerringong upgrade

Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) is upgrading the Princes Highway between Mount Pleasant and Toolijooa Road. This work is funded by the NSW Government.

The $310 million upgrade will provide 7.5 kilometres of upgraded highway and include two new interchanges at Gerringong and Gerroa.

RMS has contracted Fulton Hogan to design and construct the Gerringong upgrade. Detailed design started in January 2012 and construction is expected to start in the second half of 2012, with completion expected in the first half of 2015, weather permitting.

Latest News - May 2012

The detailed design for the Gerringong upgrade has been prepared for community comment. This design involves finalising the upgraded road alignment, the urban design, landscaping and the development of various plans to support construction and minimise impacts on the local community.

A community display will be held on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 May 2012 at the Gerringong Town Hall from 10am – 4pm. This is an opportunity to meet with the project team and find out more about the detailed design.

RMS is pleased to announce the appointment of Rowena Lennings as the community advocate for the Gerringong upgrade. Rowena will provide an additional level of support to the community in relation to the upgrade.

Other activities taking place over the coming months are:

  • Fulton Hogan and its contractors will continue site investigations in the highway road reserve, on private properties and in some of the local streets. New access agreements have been established with property owners to enable survey work and geotechnical investigations.
  • Survey work and ground digging identifying the location of utilities such as gas, water, electricity and telecommunication lines is underway and will continue.
  • Meetings will be held with Kiama Council and other key agencies to discuss the detailed design. A second meeting with key agencies with an interest in the Aboriginal heritage of the area will be held.
  • Property owners will continue to be contacted about installing noise and dust monitors on or near their property. These monitors will be placed in various parts of the alignment to determine existing noise and dust levels along the highway prior to and during construction.
  • Fencing will be installed around heritage sites and sensitive vegetation to ensure their protection from any damage during construction.

Fulton Hogan employees and its contractors carry identification. Please ask to see this identification or contact us if you have any concerns.

Traffic changes

During the coming months it may be necessary to close the road shoulder and/or one lane of the highway for short periods. Motorists are asked to obey directions given by traffic controllers.

What happens next?

The project is still in the detailed design phase. This stage includes finalising the new highway alignment and access roads. It also includes finishing the design of bridges, flooding mitigation, drainage structures, retaining walls, urban design features such as lighting and noise walls and landscaping.
