Realignment of the Princes Highway
The $58 million project to realign the Princes Highway at Conjola Mountain was completed in April 2010.
The new alignment provides improved safety and travel conditions along 3.5km of the Princes Highway, with a speed limit of 100km/h, a northbound overtaking lane, widened shoulders, and divided carriageways separated by wire rope safety barriers.
- Conjola Creek Bridge and approaches (Stage 1) opened to traffic in September 2008, and the old bridge was then demolished.
- The realignment of the Princes Highway at Conjola Mountain (Stage 2) was completed and opened to traffic in time for the Easter holiday period in April 2010.
The project was jointly funded by the NSW Government ($48 million) and the Australian Government ($10 million) under its Auslink Strategic Regional Program, and arranged by the Southern Councils Group.
Project benefits
- Improved safety and travel conditions on a better highway alignment and replacing the narrow Conjola Creek Bridge and approaches.
- Improved access for residents including the provision of two new underpasses.
- Improved traffic flow by providing a new northbound overtaking lane between Conjola Creek Bridge and Bendalong Road (Red Head Road).
- Replacement of Conjola Creek Bridge.
The new two-lane, two-way bridge is approximately 15 metres west of the old bridge, providing wider shoulders for improved safety and has been designed for a 1 in 100 year flood event.
