Herons Creek Deviation Duplication
Construction involved the provision of a northbound carriageway alongside two sections of existing single carriageway, from Stills Road to Houston Mitchell Drive and from near Ryans Road to Innes Drive, which formed part of the 18km long Herons Creek Deviation.
The project replaced the single lane sections of the Pacific Highway between Herons Creek and the junction with the Oxley Highway. The Herons Creek project was opened in two stages, the northern stage from Ryans Road to the Oxley Highway in December 1990 and the southern stage in November 1993.
Construction of the 10.5km of dual carriageway was undertaken by Daracon Engineering Pty Ltd. The new work was totally opened to traffic on 3 July 1998. As part of the work, the previous four-way junction at Houston Mitchell Drive was converted to a 'T'junction and, in order to maintain access to the old Pacific Highway and Burrawan Forest Drive, a new T-junction to the north of Ryans Road was built. Two other road junctions at Innes Drive and Aintree Close were also upgraded.
Duplicate 3-span concrete plank bridges were constructed over Sapling Creek. The area beneath the bridges now provides a crossing point for native fauna. An existing large twin cell box culvert was also extended beneath the new northbound carriageway at Wrights Creek. A trial fauna 'walkway' has been constructed through this culvert.
The new northbound carriageway has been provided with a plain concrete pavement which should lead to a long life with reduced maintenance.
