Pacific Highway Upgrade location markers
Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) has been working with the local community to identify images for location markers on the Pacific Highway to identify the towns of Kew, Moorland and Johns River.
As part of the competition announced in November 2010, Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) formed a judging panel with representative from Port Macquarie Hasting Council, Greater Taree City Council, Port Macquarie News, Manning Rivers Times, Peter Besseling's office, the former Local Member for Port Macquarie, as well as the Australians of the year from each council area.
The judging panel met in February 2011 and based on the 22 entries received, identified themes that the location marker images would be built around. The following general themes were identified, for each location marker.
Kew: Three Brother Mountains, the River, Gateway to the Camden Haven, Queens Lake, Watson Taylor Lake.
Johns River: Three Brother Mountains, Access to the ocean through Watson Taylor Lake, village life, timber industry, dairy industry, strong connection to European heritage.
Moorland: Three Brother Mountains, orange groves, dairy industry fresh produce, forest trails and 4WD / camping, associated with Diamond Head, state Forests, Crowdy Bay National Park, fertile production land.
What happens next? Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) is in the process of engaging a professional photographer to take photos of the icons/images that depict each town. An image or images of the above themes will be placed on the location markers.
The images and location marker designs will be published on this website in the coming months.
Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) would like to thank the judging panel for their ongoing participation and community members who submitted an entry.
