Roads and Maritime Services plans to upgrade the Devils Pulpit section of the Pacific Highway between Grafton and Ballina. This 7.3 kilometre section forms part of the 33km Iluka Road to Woodburn project.

Under constructionThe project is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments.

The Chief Executive of Roads and Maritime Services determined on 4 March 2011 that the construction and operation of the Devils Pulpit upgrade could proceed, subject to the conditions set out by the NSW Minister for Planning and the Australian Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities.

A contract has been awarded to John Holland Pty Ltd to build the Devils Pulpit Pacific Highway upgrade project. Construction started in December 2011 with completion scheduled mid 2013.

Key construction activities during May and June 2012

  • Completion of clearing and grubbing works
  • Stripping and stockpiling of topsoil for later re-use
  • Continuation of earthworks
  • Continuation of foundation treatments for fills and cuttings.
  • Construction of major drainage culverts
  • Commencement of Bridge Construction access
  • Completion of gate accesses from the highway
