Gap Road
The project, Gap Road, open to traffic May 1998, has provided 4km of realigned highway between Gap Road in the south and Tuckombil Canal in the north (88 to 92km north of Grafton). The project also provides a southbound overtaking lane and improved intersections.
The major portion of the new road runs to the west of the existing highway, while the northern section is located to the east. The northern end has been partially constructed over a flood plain and the southern end runs through slightly undulating land.
A number of sharp crests and bends, which were the scene of many serious accidents involving heavy vehicles over previous years, have been eliminated by the work. Benefits to road users include improved traffic flow, safer travel and more overtaking opportunities.
The project was fully funded by the NSW State Government.
