Pacific Highway safety works - Nambucca Heads to Urunga

A safety review of the section of the Highway was commenced in November 2010. The community provided over 110 submissions to the safety review. We thank all residents who  provided feedback.

Following the review the NSW Government announced two speed limit reductions on the Pacific Highway between Nambucca Heads and Urunga.

The maximum speed limit on the Pacific Highway between south of the Valla Beach Road intersection to near the Hungry Head intersection will be reduced from 100km/h to 90km/h. The maximum speed limit on the Pacific Highway from south of the Hungry Head intersection to near Urunga will be changed from 80km/h to 70km/h.

A range of road safety improvements were decided. These include improvements to intersections, the installation of wire rope central barriers, upgraded warning signs and the installation of vehicle and weather-activated variable message boards.

While the safety work will be delivered in the next three years, immediate road safety work includes:

  • Removing the two short overtaking lanes north of the Valla Beach intersection and installing a painted central median.
  • Installing overhead speed limit signs.
  • Improving and upgrading warning signs.
  • Clearing vegetation to improve the sight distance at all intersections.

Two speed limit reductions on the Pacific Highway between Nambucca Heads and Urunga will also be implemented as part of the safety review.

In addition previously planned safety work at the Martells Road and Pacific Highway intersection about two kilometres south of Urunga started in February 2011.

This $3 million safety work at Martells Road is part of the NSW and Federal Governments' $3.6 billion funding commitment to upgrade the Pacific Highway announced in 2009.

Most of the funds are being directed to upgrading the Pacific Highway to dual carriageway, however there is a need to address road safety and traffic issues on the road.
