Reports

Over the last 10 years, Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) has carried out a number of studies to identify areas that would be suitable locations for an additional crossing of the Clarence River at Grafton. See the project documents page for more information on these studies.

HEAVY VEHICLE STUDY REPORT (FEBRUARY 2011)

A study of heavy vehicle movements in Grafton, South Grafton and adjacent areas on the road network, including the Grafton Bridge and Summerland Way was undertaken during August 2010. The study aims at providing a comprehensive understanding of heavy vehicle travel patterns to inform the route selection of the additional crossing of the Clarence River at Grafton.

The results showed that:

  • The existing Grafton Bridge carries approximately 29,500 vehicles per week day.
  • Approximately 5% of vehicles crossing the existing bridge are heavy vehicles (approximately 1475 heavy vehicles per week day).
  • Approximately 97% of all vehicles crossing the bridge have an origin and / or destination within Grafton or South Grafton, and 3% of vehicles are through trips that do not have an origin or destination within Grafton or South Grafton. This is comparable to the previous study in March 2009 which indicated 2% of traffic using the bridge was through traffic.
  • Approximately 88% of heavy vehicles crossing the Grafton Bridge have an origin and / or destination within Grafton or South Grafton, and 12% of heavy vehicles are considered through trips that do not have an origin or destination within Grafton or South Grafton.

Businesses and bus companies were also surveyed as part of this study.

Traffic study report (February 2010)

In February 2010, Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) advised the outcomes of the recent traffic investigations and sought feedback from the community on four preliminary route crossing locations close to the existing bridge.

Traffic study report (December 2009)

This report compared previous traffic modelling carried out in 2003 with current traffic levels. It looked at changes to the local traffic since the Grafton Shopping World development and new industrial and residential developments in the South Grafton/Clarenza areas.

The study indicated that most of the traffic that uses the existing bridge is local traffic.
