Terrigal Drive
Terrigal Drive connects the retail and commercial centres around Erina, at the Central Coast Highway, with tourist and residential centres around the beach suburbs of Terrigal and Wamberal.
Background
In March 2007, the NSW Government announced a package of improvement works for Terrigal Drive, targeting safety and efficiency at intersections along the route between Erina and Terrigal.
Improvements to the existing intersections along the route have been identified as a priority to improve safety, ease congestion during peak hours and provide capacity for future growth and development of the Central Coast region and the tourist area of Terrigal.
Benefits
The benefits of the improvement works along Terrigal Drive include:
- Improved safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
- Increased efficiency on Terrigal Drive to improve traffic flow and reduce travel times and congestion at peak hours.
- Improved public transport facilities.
Current projects on the Terrigal Drive route include
Intersection of Terrigal Drive and Charles Kay Drive
This intersection was identified for safety improvements due to known crashes and congestion at this location. Extensive queuing and delays are experienced on both Terrigal Drive and Charles Kay Drive.
A proposal for traffic and safety improvements at the intersections of Terrigal Drive with Charles Kay Drive and Brunswick Road was released for community comments concluding in June 2011.
Intersections of Terrigal Drive and Jessie Hurley Drive and Portsmouth Road
The Jessie Hurley Drive intersection was identified for safety improvements due to a high number of crashes between vehicles turning right out of Jessie Hurley Drive and westbound through traffic on Terrigal Drive.
The Portsmouth Road intersection was identified for safety improvements due to a history of rear-end crashes. There is also no ability to pass vehicles turning right into Portsmouth Road, which leads to safety and delay issues.
Options to improve these intersections were displayed for comment from 17 March to 9 May 2011.
A review of the submissions received is available for download.
In response to the community feedback, additional options are being investigated. These are intended to provide the same benefits as the previous options, but addressing many of the issues raised by the community.
A community update will be released for community comments in the near future once the options have been sufficiently developed.
Completed projects on the Terrigal Drive route include
Intersection of Terrigal Drive and Bellbird Avenue
This intersection was identified for safety improvements due to a history of rear end crashes. There was also an issue between vehicles turning right and buses attempting to safely stop to pick up and drop off passengers.
A roundabout has now been constructed at the intersection of Terrigal Drive and Bellbird Avenue to improve traffic and safety conditions. The improvements at this location also included formalising bus bays and improving pedestrian connections.
The roundabout allows motorists to undertake a u-turn where they are unable to cross the median safely between Charles Kay Drive and Bellbird Avenue.
Construction was completed in September 2011.
Intersection of Terrigal Drive, Chetwynd Road and Tarragal Glen Avenue
This intersection was identified for safety improvements due to congestion during peak periods, a known accident history, and to address pedestrian safety issues at this location.
The improvements at this location consist of:
- Part-time (traffic activated) traffic signals on the Tarragal Glen Avenue leg of the roundabout, to improve traffic flow on Terrigal Drive, particularly during the afternoon peak.
- Outside of peak traffic demand, when there are no cars queued up, the traffic lights remain off and the roundabout operates as normal.
- A pedestrian refuge on the western leg of the roundabout with a footpath connecting to the existing bus bay.
Construction was completed in 31 August 2010.
Intersection of Terrigal Drive and Havenview Road
Safety improvements near this intersection involving a pedestrian refuge and busbay were completed in June 2010.
This intersection was identified for safety improvements to ensure safe pedestrian access to and from the bus stop. Buses also had issues stopping at the bus stop, due to vehicles parking close to the bus stop.
The improvements included a formalised bus stop, and a pedestrian refuge to assist with crossing Terrigal Drive.
