Central Coast Highway and Woy Woy Road at Kariong
The NSW Government is upgrading the existing traffic light intersections through Kariong to improve safety, ease congestion during peak hours and provide capacity for future growth and development of the Central Coast area.
Background
The Central Coast Highway provides the major road link from the F3 Sydney – Newcastle Freeway to Gosford, Erina and the surrounding coastal suburbs. One of the important sections of this link is through Kariong, which includes two existing traffic light intersections in close proximity.
This section of the highway was congested during peak hours, with significant delays for motorists. Safety was also improved with upgrade.
Several options were investigated for the upgrade. The impacts of each option were evaluated based on traffic capacity performance, disruption during construction, property impacts, impacts on surrounding flora, fauna and cultural heritage, and cost associated with the works. Roads and Maritime Services' (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) design aims to provide the best value for money with the least impacts to the community and environment.
Roadworks commenced in February 2010 and opened to traffic in June 2011.
Benefits
- Improved safety for motorists and pedestrians.
- Increased capacity on the Central Coast Highway to improve traffic flow and reduce travel times and congestion at peak hours.
- Improved access to the Central Coast Highway for Kariong residents and other road users.
- Improved public transport facilities including indented bus stops that will enable buses to stop safely without interrupting the flow of traffic and provide safer access for passengers.
- Caters for traffic generated by the new Kariong Mountains High School.
Kariong Mountains High School underpass
Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) has been working with the Department of Education and Training, Gosford City Council and the Central Coast Regional Development Corporation to improve pedestrian facilities across the Central Coast Highway for pedestrians.
An underpass was identified as the preferred option by the Department of Education and Training in mid 2010 in consultation with Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority). Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) is delivering the underpass in 2011 to provide for the growing number of school pedestrians.
