Upgrading the Pacific Highway between Anzac Road and Johnson Road, Tuggerah

Tuggerah Straight

Background

The section of 'Tuggerah Straight' between Anzac Road, at Tuggerah Railway Station, and Johnson Road is 1.8 km long had previously consisted of two traffic lanes, one in each direction.

The road is part of the state road route west of Tuggerah Lake, connecting the Central Coast's northern residential and industrial areas including Warnervale, Charmhaven, Budgewoi Lake, northern Tuggerah Lake and Toukley. It is used by an average of 27,000 vehicles a day.

The concept for the upgrade was displayed for public comment from November 2003 to January 2004. Community feedback from this display was incorporated into a revised design. Improvements include providing parking bays along the Pacific Highway, a wider median and a roundabout at Mildon Road.

The upgrade widened the road from one lane to two lanes in each direction, with improved intersections, pedestrian facilities and a dedicated off-road cycleway and opened to traffic in late October 2009.

Features

The upgrade included:

  • Widening of the road from one to two lanes in each direction with the dual carriageways separated by a median with wire-rope safety barriers to improve motorists' safety.
  • A two lane roundabout at Mildon Road to assist traffic accessing commercial properties.
  • Traffic lights with bus priority signals at Anzac Road and Johnson Road. Signals at Anzac Road will also provide pedestrian access across the highway to Tuggerah Railway station.
  • A shoulder and some parking bays on the western side of the highway.
  • Improved pedestrian facilities along and across the highway at bus stop locations.
  • A dedicated off-road cycleway along the eastern side of the highway.
  • Improved street lighting and landscaping.

Benefits

  • Improved access and traffic efficiency.
  • Improved travel times.
  • Additional timed on-street parking.
  • Improved safety and access for cyclists to Tuggerah Lakes and Wyong.
  • Landscape proposals to enhance the visual amenity of the area.
