Sun Valley Road to Bayside Drive Green Point

Avoca Drive has been upgraded from Sun Valley Road to Bayside Drive, Green Point. This project was funded by the NSW Government.

Background

Avoca Drive connects the residential suburbs of Green Point, Saratoga, Kincumber and south eastern beaches with the commercial areas of Erina and Gosford, through to the F3 Freeway.

Avoca Drive between Sun Valley Road and Bayside Drive is 1.3 kilometres long, with intersections at Koolang Road and Park Crescent. The road carries approximately 28,000 vehicles per day.

The project

Avoca Drive has been upgraded with an additional lane in each direction, improved intersections and new cycleway and pedestrian facilities between Sun Valley Road and Bayside Drive.

Providing these additional lanes has reduced the congestion that was caused by traffic merging from Sun Valley Road, improving traffic flow and travel times.

Construction commenced in August 2009 and the upgrade was opened to traffic in February 2011.

This upgrade completes around four kilometres of dual carriageway from the Central Coast Highway to the Davistown roundabout.

Features

The upgrade included:

Widening Avoca Drive from one lane to two lanes in each direction. The dual carriageways separated by raised concrete median and, in selected locations, a wire rope safety barrier to improve safety for road users.
Extending Lakewood Avenue to create a new link to Avoca Drive.
Installing new traffic lights at the new Avoca Drive intersection with Koolang Road/Lakewood Avenue.
Providing left-in, left-out access only at Park Crescent.
Improving pedestrian facilities along and across Avoca Drive and into Lakewood Avenue.
Building a shared cycle/pedestrian path along the eastern side of Avoca Drive.
Improving street lighting and landscaping.
Delivering a split level carriageway between Bayside Drive and Koolang Road to better manage property access.

Measures taken to protect the environment

The extension of Lakewood Avenue impacts on mature vegetation. This impact will be minimised through careful design, building retaining walls to reduce the amount of vegetation removed and narrowing of the roadway. Other environmental offsets proposed are:

Replanting of selected native trees (more trees will be re-planted than will be removed).
Building of an under-road fauna crossing.
Removing weeds throughout the adjacent bushland.
Dedicating land to increase the size of Green Point Reserve.
