Pacific Highway upgrade - Ourimbah

Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) has completed the upgrade of the section of Pacific Highway between Glen Road and Burns Road at Ourimbah from one lane to two lanes in each direction. The project included three major intersection upgrades and safety improvements for pedestrians and cyclists.

The four lanes were opened to traffic in January 2010.

Background

The Pacific Highway between Glen Road and Burns Road, Ourimbah provides the main connection from the north between the F3 Freeway and Gosford, carrying about 30,000 vehicles per day.

The NSW Government provided funding to upgrade the highway in stages to two lanes in each direction with priority areas targeted for early delivery.

Improvement works to the Dog Trap Road intersection aimed at improving safety, assisting traffic flow during peak periods and easing congestion outside Ourimbah Primary School were opened to traffic in July 2007 as the first stage of the project.

The section from Glen Road to Burns Road was fully opened to traffic in January 2010.

The project

  • Two lanes in each direction separated by a raised median or wire rope safety barrier to improve safety for motorists.
  • Wider kerb side lanes in each direction for on-road cycle use.
  • Traffic lights with pedestrian crossing facilities at intersections with Glen Road, Station Street and Ourimbah Creek Road / Yates Road to enhance safety and improve traffic efficiency.
  • King Street, Charles Street and all vehicular access to properties fronting the Highway are restricted to left-in and left-out only.
  • Old Burns Road intersection is restricted to left out only.
  • The existing two lane roundabout configuration at the Chittaway Road intersection is being retained.
  • A continuous shared use pedestrian/cycleway on the western side of the Highway to improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Improved street lighting.
  • Indented bus bays to enable buses to stop safely without interrupting the flow of traffic and  to provide safer access for passengers.

Revised access to Pacific Highway/Burns Road intersection

Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) investigated alternative intersection arrangements for the Pacific Highway / Burns Road intersection.

The new link road which was opened to traffic in October 2009, provides an alternative access from Burns Road to the F3 Freeway. It also improves access arrangements into and out of the upgraded commuter car park.
