Pedestrian safety improvements near UWS campus at Rydalmere
Work has started on an $800,000 pedestrian safety upgrade near the Victoria Road entrance to the University of Western Sydney (UWS) campus at Rydalmere.
The project will improve the way in which pedestrians move around the university entrance.
Currently, pedestrians spill on to the road and are not using the pedestrian-controlled crossing on Victoria Road or the pedestrian bridge across James Ruse Drive to access UWS.
Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority of NSW) is carrying out road construction work at night on Victoria Road near the university entrance.
The night work began on Sunday 6 November 2011 and is scheduled to finish on Friday 9 December, weather permitting.
The night work is being carried out between 8pm and 5am Sunday to Friday.
Scheduled works
The pedestrian safety upgrade involves:
- Moving the staggered pedestrian-controlled crossing 30 metres west of its current location.
- Installing pedestrian fencing on either side of the new pedestrian crossing.
- Closing the existing pedestrian crossing by extending the existing pedestrian fencing along the central median.
- Removing six metres of concrete median to accommodate new pedestrian crossing.
- Widening the footpath near the bus stop on the northern and southern side of Victoria Road.
- Installing about 20 metres of kerbing and a log retaining wall
- Relocating one light pole within the road reserve to accommodate the new pedestrian crossing.
- Installing three new traffic light posts to control traffic at the new pedestrian crossing.
- Improving stormwater run-off and drainage.
What happens next
Work is scheduled to take about four weeks to complete, weather permitting.
Warning signs will be in place to alert drivers and pedestrians of the changed traffic conditions during construction.
Where possible, work will be undertaken during the day but for safety reasons, some work may be done at night.
