Go-ahead for bus priority in Bridge Street, Penshurst
Plans to construct an eastbound bus only lane in Bridge Street, Penshurst, on the approach to the intersection with Kings Georges Road are proceeding.
The bus only lane will allow five bus routes operating between the Penshurst and Hurstville railway stations to be aligned in one corridor and reduce the distance travelled for eastbound buses by more than a third of a kilometre.
Features
The project, fully funded by the NSW Government, will improve the reliability of buses using the strategic bus corridor linking Hurstville and Bankstown.
The project will involve changes to the Bridge Street/King Georges Road intersection, including:
- Removing the existing triangular traffic island in Bridge Street west.
- Installing traffic lights for vehicles turning left from Bridge Street and for pedestrians using the new crossing in Bridge Street west.
- Construction of an eastbound bus only in Bridge Street west, allowing buses to cross King George.
- Removing two parking spaces on the northern side of Bridge Street.
General traffic will be required to turn left into King Georges Road. No change will be made to parking on the railway side of Bridge Street.
What happens next?
Weather permitting, initial work is scheduled to start in late February 2012 and be completed by mid 2012.
Because of traffic volumes using the intersection Bridge Street-King Georges Road intersection in the morning peak, some construction work will be done at night.
