Short term registration

Short term registration (STR) provides the following options for registration renewal:

  • Six-month registrations for most light vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes, including motorcycles and trailers.
  • Three-month registrations for trailers.

STR is NOT available when:

  • Establishing a new registration.
  • Transferring and renewing registration at the same time.

STR provides you with the flexibility to renew your vehicle's registration for a shorter period and move your renewal date at no additional cost.

You can take up STR options by renewing your registration:

  • Online at myRTA
  • Over the phone.
    • Automated phone system on 1300 360 782.
    • Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) Contact Centre 13 22 13
  • Via post:

    Roads and Maritime Services
    PO Box 21
    Parkes NSW 2870
  • At any motor registry.

CTP green slips

A Compulsory Third Party (CTP) green slip must be received electronically by Roads and Maritime Services before STR can be processed online or by phone.

Currently, insurers do not issue hard copy green slips for six-month terms. Discussions are underway with the insurers on this issue.

The period of your green slip and registration period must match.

Note: All green slips have a use-by date. the use-by date means they must be used with your registration renewal by the date specified or they will no longer be valid.

Green slips for short term registration have a use-by date of 21 days after the registration expiry date. For example, if you purchase a green slip with a start date of 1 June, you must use it to renew your registration by 22 June. If you don't renew within the 21 days, you cannot renew with the short term registration option. Instead, you may only renew the registration for 12 months and a new 12 month green slip will be required. This should be considered if you wish to mail your short term registration renewal.

If you have any queries regarding the use-by date of your green slip, you should contact your CTP insurer.

Safety check reports

An electronic safety check report must be received by Roads and Maritime Services before STR can be processed (unless your vehicle doesn't need a safety check).

Hard copy safety check reports can be accepted in motor registries.

A safety check inspection is only valid for 42 days.

Registration labels

If you renew online or by phone and change your registration term, please allow up to seven days (ten days if paying by BPAY) for a new registration certificate and label to be posted to you.

If the transaction is at a motor registry, a new registration certificate and label will be printed and provided to you at the time.
