Frequently asked questions about registration

Where on my vehicle should I stick the rego label?

The label should be stuck on the inside of the lower-left portion of the front windscreen or on a fixed glass panel on the left-hand side of your vehicle.

For caravans and other trailers with a rear facing window, the label may be stuck on the inside of that window in a position as close as possible to the number plate. Hinged windows displaying a rego label must be closed while the vehicle is being towed.

For any other vehicles, the label should be affixed on or adjacent to the vehicle's rear number plate without obscuring the vehicle's number plate characters.

Suitable label holders may be purchased from most automotive retail suppliers.

What's the best way to remove my old registration label from my vehicle?

The RTA's registration label manufacturer has provided instructions to assist our customers with removing their registration labels. For complete instructions from our registration label manufacturer click here.

How does a vehicle become unregistered?

Your vehicle is unregistered if you do not pay your registration by the date your registration expires. If you don't pay the registration fee within three months of the expiry date, the registration will be cancelled. This means you will need to extablish a new registration for the vehicle if you plan to continue driving it.

Following notice from the RTA that the vehicle registration has been cancelled, you have 14 days to return the number plates to the RTA. It is an offence to keep the number plates and you can be fined up to $2200 by a court.

Does my vehicle need an inspection?

Light and Heavy vehicles, unless exempt, require an inspection. Your registration renewal notice will indicate if your vehicle requires an inspection or an RTA Heavy Vehicle Inspection (See Heavy Vehicle Inspection Scheme).

If your renewal notice indicates Inspection required you'll need to visit an Authorised Inspection Station (also called e-Safety station) or Heavy Vehicle Authorised Inspection Station (HVAIS).

If your renewal notice indicates RTA Heavy Vehicle Inspection, you will need to make an appointment for your inspection by contacting the RTA Heavy Vehicle customer service on 1300 364 847.

Unregistered light vehicles need to be inspected at an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Station (AUVIS).

Unregistered Heavy Vehicles need to be inspected at a Heavy Vehicle Authorised Inspection Station (HVAIS).

Unregistered Heavy Vehicles that are overdimensional and overmass, and lift and tow type trucks require an RTA Heavy Vehicle Inspection (HVIS). Customers requiring more information on heavy vehicle inspections should contact the RTA Heavy Vehicle Customer Service.

What is e-Safety Check?

An e-Safety Check is an electronic inspection report issued by an e-Safety station and sent to the RTA electronically. It proves a vehicle has passed the required roadworthiness standard. An e-Safety check will allow you to renew your vehicle registration via myRTA.com or over the phone.

Can I renew my registration online or by telephone?

You can renew registration for most light vehicles (cars, motorcycles, and light trailers), regardless of their age.

Do I need a receipt number on my rego label?

When you have successfully completed your registration online or by phone, you will be issued with a renewal receipt number. Write the number in black ink on the space provided on your Certificate of Registration. It is not necessary to write the number on your registration label. The RTA does not send out a receipted Certificate of Registration or label.

When do I need to renew my registration at a motor registry or by mail?

Registration for heavy vehicles, public passenger vehicles and conditionally registered vehicles must be renewed at a motor registry or by mail.

Do I need to pay my CTP before I can renew my rego online?

Yes. The RTA must have your CTP insurance (green slip) details before you can renew your registration online. Most CTP insurers now send your green slip details to the RTA electronically. Check with your CTP insurer for further information.

What happens if the police see my rego label without a receipt number on it? Will I be fined?

No, you will not be fined if your registration has been renewed.

What do I do if I lose my rego label or rego certificate?

You will need too go to a motor registry to apply for a replacement certificate of registration or registration label. You will need to bring your current registration certificate (if applicable), present appropriate Proof of Identity and pay the fee.

What do I do if I sell my vehicle?

You should notify the RTA when you sell your vehicle.

You can lodge a Notice of Disposal online at myRecords or at any motor registry. If lodging at a motor registry, use the Notice of Disposal form on the back of the Certificate of Registration or get one from the motor registry. Fill in the form with the buyer's details completed and send it/had it in to a motor registry. Forms with incomplete details will not be processed.

When you sell a vehicle is is important that you notify the RTA of the changes. This will prevent the Police referring to you any fines incurred by the purchaser.
