Frequently asked questions

Why was the apprentice registration rebate introduced?

The apprentice registration rebate has been introduced by the NSW government to address serious skill shortages in the traditional trades by helping make apprenticeships more attractive to young people.

How much is the rebate?

A rebate of $100 is available on the cost of registering a vehicle.

Who will be eligible for the rebate?

The rebate is available to first and second year apprentices registered with the NSW Department of Education and Training. The rebate is available for vehicle registrations or registration renewals paid from 1 July 2005.

When can I claim the rebate?

You can claim the rebate from 1 July 2005 if you are a first or second year apprentice. You must pay your registration in the normal way. You may then claim a rebate on new and renewal registrations paid from 1 July 2005. Only one rebate may be claimed per financial year.

Where can I get an application form?

The application form is available to view or download from the box at the bottom of this page.

Are there any restrictions on the vehicle for which a claim may be made?

Yes, to be eligible for the rebate the vehicle must be:

  • Registered in NSW.
  • Registered in the name of an eligible apprentice, or jointly with an eligible apprentice.
  • Be registered for general private or general business use.
  • Have been registered in the name of an eligible apprentice, or jointly with an eligible apprentice, at the time the registration fee and motor vehicle tax were last paid.

Can I claim a rebate on a vehicle I purchased and transferred to my name?

If you did not renew the registration on transferring the vehicle to your name you cannot claim the rebate. You will be able to claim the rebate when your registration is due for renewal. You must pay the registration in the normal way and then claim the rebate.

Is there a time limit on claiming the rebate?

You must be eligible for the rebate at the time you make your claim. That is if you are a second year apprentice you must make the claim before you complete the second year of your apprenticeship. If you make your claim after completing the second year of your apprenticeship the NSW Department of Education and Training will not be able to verify that you are a second year apprentice and your claim will not be processed.

How will the rebate be paid?

The rebate will be paid by electronic funds transfer into a deposit account in your name at a bank, credit union or building society. Payments may be made into accounts held in joint names. Remittance advice will be mailed to the applicant.

What if I disagree with my apprentice status?

The NSW Department of Education and Training (DET) will verify your eligibility for the apprentice registration rebate. If the DET is unable to verify that you are a first or second year apprentice you will receive written advice that your application cannot be processed. You will be advised to contact DET for further information regarding your apprentice status.
