How to get a new registration

You need to get a new registration if you:

• Buy a new vehicle that has never been registered.
• Move a vehicle into NSW from interstate. This includes vehicles with or without a current interstate registration.
• Import a vehicle from overseas.
• Have a vehicle with expired or cancelled registration. This includes NSW registrations that have been unpaid for longer than three months.

A vehicle can be registered in the name of a person or an incorporated organisation. Since May 2008, vehicles are only registered in the name of the one operator who takes responsibility for the vehicle - either a person or an incorporated body, such as a company.
