The courtesy name is a registration data field that may be used to record the name of a business or organisation, but not an individual's name. It is a breach of privacy legislation to record the name of an individual.
The registered operator of a vehicle can nominate a courtesy name of no more than 40 characters when establishing or transferring the registration of a light vehicle.
To add, change or delete a courtesy name, you can go to a motor registry or phone Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) Contact Centre on 13 22 13. You must provide appropriate proof of identity.
Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) has the discretion to refuse to record a courtesy name which may be considered offensive or in bad taste.
The courtesy name field is not available for registrations in more than one name established before 19 May 2008.
