Stamp duty

Stamp duty is collected by Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) on behalf of the Office of State Revenue when registration is issued to a different person or corporation. Stamp duty is based on the market value of the vehicle or the price you paid, whichever is greater.

Stamp duty is calculated at:

  • 3% of the market value up to $45,000
  • 5% on the value over $45,000.

For example, the stamp duty for a vehicle with a market value of $50,000 is calculated as:

1.Stamp duty on $45,000 at 3%=$1,350
2.Stamp duty on $5,000 at 5%=$250
3.Total stamp duty=$1,600*

You can use this method to calculate the amount of stamp duty payable for your vehicle, or you can visit the Office of State Revenue website and select the 'Calculators' link on the right-hand side.

Please note that as of 1 July 2009, caravans and camper trailers are exempt from stamp duty. For further information please visit the Office of State Revenue website.
