On 31 January 2011, the NSW Government introduced new legislation to prohibit the registration of NSW written-off vehicles. The reforms aim to improve road safety and consumer protection and clamp down on car re-birthing and vehicle theft.
On 1 August 2011, an amendment to the laws was effected meaning that all vehicles listed on the written-off vehicle register before 31 January 2011 must now have a 'Certificate of Compliance' issued by a NSW Fair Trading licensed repairer as well as meeting all other Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) inspection requirements in order to get their repairable written-off vehicle registered.
