Maintenance work begins on Brown Street overpass bridge
Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) will soon start work on the Brown Street overpass bridge in Leichhardt.
An RMS spokesperson said the $260,000 bridge maintenance project will take about five weeks to complete, weather permitting, with most work being done at night.
“The existing handrail on the Brown Street overpass is corroded and will be replaced with a new handrail to improve pedestrian safety,” the spokesperson said.
“As part of this work asbestos professionals have been contracted to remove asbestos from the bridge. Asbestos is commonly found in old structures in the Sydney metropolitan area.
“All appropriate measures will be in place to ensure the safety of workers and the community during the removal work.
“Any asbestos material found will be removed and treated in accordance with the NSW WorkCover Working With Asbestos Guide 2008.
“One night this week the asbestos material will be unbolted, immediately contained on site and taken to a licensed facility for disposal,” the spokesperson said.
The bridge will be closed to pedestrians during the work. One lane on the bridge will remain open with traffic control in place.
Traffic lanes on Parramatta Road directly under the bridge will be partially closed with minor delays expected.
“Every effort will be made to minimise the impact of noise associated with this work,” the spokesperson said.
Motorists are advised to plan their journey, allow extra travel time and obey all signs.
