Plan your trip on the Pacific Highway over the Christmas holidays

21-12-2007

Motorists using the Pacific Highway over the busy holiday period are being advised to plan their trip before setting off and to take regular breaks from driving.

An RTA spokesperson said drivers were advised to avoid travelling on the highway on peak travel dates if possible and to expect delays.

“Traffic on roads to popular holiday destinations, like the Pacific Highway, increases by up to 50 per cent during the holidays,” a spokesperson said.

“Delays are expected on the highway from today (Friday, 21 December). In particular, it is expected that Boxing Day will be extremely busy.

“We urge all motorists – particularly during the holiday period – to be patient and take care. Motorists should be aware of fatigue, stick to the speed limits and avoid mixing alcohol with driving.

“We also ask people to slow down with the latest NSW Centre for Road Safety statistics revealing speeding kills 18 per cent more people in summer than winter.

“Many speed related crashes over summer happen on dry, sealed roads in sunny conditions because motorists become complacent and take unnecessary risks.

“Special traffic arrangements will be in place at key locations to help minimise delays caused by traffic congestion and roadside variable message signs will advise drivers of any delays ahead.

“We encourage motorists using the Pacific Highway to plan their journey. Motorists should phone the Traffic Information Line on 132 701 for traffic update before setting out and stay tuned to local radio stations for traffic reports.”

With increasing numbers choosing to holiday on the North Coast, the RTA advises drivers that delays are expected along the highway, particularly at:

  • Hexham
  • North of Karuah
  • Bulahdelah
  • Kew
  • Kempsey
  • Macksville
  • Coffs Harbour
  • Ballina
  • Banora Point

“The New England Highway offers an alternative route for motorists travelling between Sydney and Brisbane.

“To help reduce traffic congestion, all project construction work on the Pacific Highway will close down over the Christmas period from 21 December with work to resume progressively from 7 January 2007.”

Motorists are reminded to ‘Stop, Revive, Survive” before fatigue affects their concentration and to plan their journeys.

“Driver fatigue is a factor in one in five crashes on NSW roads, so for the safety of your family and other motorists, take the advice of the experts, and stop every two hours for a break.

“The RTA encourages motorists to stop in towns along the highway and to use the dedicated rest areas along the Pacific Highway.

“Many rest areas have toilets, picnic tables, playgrounds and shaded areas to take the family and have a rest break before setting off on the road again.”

Motorists are also reminded that double demerit points will be in force during the Christmas/New Year holidays to improve road safety over the holiday season.

Double demerits will be in force from today (21 December) to 1 January 2007 (inclusive) for speeding, seatbelt and helmet offences.

Useful travel information and a list of Driver Reviver sites and RTA rest areas is available on the RTA’s website.
