2008 vehicle registration reforms

On 17 August 2007, the Minister for Roads announced major reforms to the vehicle registration process that will save NSW motorists time and money. These reforms will take effect from 1 July 2008. See below for a full explanation of the reforms or click here to renew your rego.

Extension of Vehicle Safety Inspection Exemptions

The period for vehicle safety inspection exemption for new light vehicles is now extended from three to five years.

The five year inspection exemption also applies to light commercial vehicles, panel vans, caravans, trailers and four wheel drive vehicles with a compliance date of 1 July 2003 onwards.

The new policy does not apply to heavy vehicles, buses, public passenger vehicles, taxis and hire cars. Hire cars are now required to have annual inspection.

e-Safety Stations

Authorised Inspection Stations (AIS) are now referred to as an “e-Safety Station”. To find your nearest e-Safety Station click here.

e-Safety Checks

Pink slips are now electronic and will be referred to as an “e-Safety Check.” Your local e-Safety Station will transmit your e-Safety Check electronically to the RTA on your behalf.

Single Registered Operator

Only a single registered operator is now required for each vehicle, either a person or an incorporated body. Names of second registered operators, trading names of corporations and names of unincorporated organisations are no longer permitted.

A new courtesy name field is available if you choose to record additional information. This will be printed on the Certificate of Registration.

This change will be implemented for all ‘establish and transfer’ registration transactions from 19 May 2008.  Existing registrations will continue unaffected until the registration is transferred or re-established.

DOL Certificate of Registration

Motor dealers who are part of the RTA’s Dealer Online scheme now have the capability to print certificates of registration and labels for new cars they are registering.

Redesign of the Certificate of Registration

The Certificate of Registration has been redesigned to provide consolidated and clear information on the required payments, dates due and vehicle safety inspection requirements. In addition, advice on payment methods has been consolidated and streamlined. The disposal and transfer details on the rear of the certificate have been redesigned.

Usage Codes

Obsolete and duplicate usage codes have now been streamlined with other existing codes. This will make more vehicles eligible for online registration.
