How it works

The Driver Qualification Test (DQT) is made up of two parts.

Part 1 tests advanced safe driving knowledge (Knowledge Test) and Part 2 tests advanced hazard perception skills (Hazard Perception).

All interaction with the DQT computer is via the touch screen.

Parts 1 and 2 include practice questions to help you get used to the test and the technology.

The first screen that you will see is the "Welcome screen" (below right).

Part 1, Knowledge Test

The structure of Part 1 is:

  • Instructions
  • Three practice questions
  • 15 multiple choice knowledge questions
  • Screen to take you to Part 2.
Welcome screen

There are three types of question.

  1. Text (words)
  2. Text and picture/diagram
  3. Text animation (a picture that moves).

Each question has four possible answers.

For each question, you must touch the answer you think is most correct.

The answer you select will then turn green.

You submit your answer to the computer by touching the OK button.

The test moves on to the next question until Part 1 is completed.

The computer then takes you to Part 2.

Part 2, Hazard Perception

The structure of Part 2 is:

  • Instructions
  • Two practice questions
  • Ten test questions
  • Feedback screens which give you your results for Part 1 and Part 2 and Information on how to improve your performance.

The 10 test items (and two practice items) in Part 2 are film clips of real traffic situations. You see what the driver would see and you are told what the driver wants to do.

Your job is to touch the screen if and when you think it would be safe for the driver to do it.

If you think it would be unsafe to take any action, or do not think any action is necessary, do not touch the screen.

You can only see each item once, and when you have given your answer, it is locked in.

At the end of the test, a results screen appears which tells you whether you passed or failed the whole DQT (Part 1 and Part 2), and gives you feedback on areas where you need to improve.
