Car
This is the first stage in the Graduated Licensing Scheme and is the test you must pass to get your learner licence. You must be 16 years of age or older to be eligible to take the test.
For more information about the graduated licensing scheme read the brochure - A Guide for New Drivers. You can pick one up from any motor registry or download one from the box below.
What is the DKT?
The DKT is a computer-based road rules knowledge test. You have to answer 45 questions.
The computer selects the questions at random from a question bank of more than 600. You will first be asked 15 general knowledge questions and you need to get at least 12 correct. You will then be asked 30 road safety questions (including traffic signs) and you need to get at least 29 correct.
For more information on the test structure use the link in the ‘In this section’ box.
Studying for the DKT
Everything you need to know to pass the DKT is included in the Road Users’ Handbook (RUH), which you can read and/or download online (see box below), or buy from any motor registry. You can also read and download the question bank, which includes all the questions that you could be asked in the DKT (see 'In this section' above right).
There are no short cuts to passing the test. If you don’t study the RUH, chances are that you will not pass.
Once you’ve studied for the test you can use the online practice DKT to check that you're ready to take the test. You can also use it to check your progress when studying.
To go to the practice DKT use the link in the ‘In this section’ box.
When you are confident that you fully understand and know the information contained in the RUH you should book in for your DKT.
