There is no maximum time period for a driver to move through the licensing scheme. In other words, a provisional driver can move through the system at his or her own pace.
If you do not pass the relevant tests within the term of your P1 or P2 licence period, you can renew the licence. Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) will send you a renewal notice.
