If you come to live in NSW from another Australian State or Territory and have a current rider licence that is the equivalent to a NSW provisional or unrestricted rider licence, you can transfer your interstate licence to a NSW licence free of charge. The NSW rider licence will be issued to the expiry date of the interstate or internal territory licence up to a maximum of five years.
If you have a current interstate or internal territory learner rider licence and you take up residence in NSW you may apply for either a NSW provisional rider licence or a NSW learner rider licence.
If you have held your motorcycle rider licence for less than 12 months, you will receive a NSW provisional P1 rider licence. If you are under 25 years of age and have held your motorcycle rider licence for more than 12 months, but less than three years, you will receive a NSW provisional P2 rider licence. Riders over the age of 25 years of age are exempt from the P2 phase.
To obtain a NSW learner rider licence you will need to:
- Be at least 16 years and 9 months of age or older.
- Take your interstate or internal territory photo learner rider licence to an Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) motor registry or agency.
- Provide proof of identity.
- Provide proof of residential address.
- Complete an application form.
- Pass an eyesight test.
- Have your photo taken.
You will then be issued with a NSW learner rider licence.
Whilst you are not required to attend pre-learner rider training you will be required to attend pre-provisional training once you have held a learner rider licence for a minimum of three months.
If you wish to apply for a NSW provisional rider licence instead of a NSW learner rider licence you will need to:
- Have held your interstate or internal territory learner rider licence for a minimum of three months.
- Be 17 years of age or older.
- Take your interstate or internal territory photo learner rider licence to an Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) motor registry or agency.
- Provide proof of identity.
- Provide proof of residential address.
- Complete an application form.
- Pass an eyesight test.
- Pay the prescribed test fee, book, attend and pass the Motorcycle Operator Skills Test (if you live in a declared area) or Rider Driving Test (if you live outside a declared area).
If you pass the Motorcycle Operator Skills Test (or Rider Driving Test outside a declared area) you will be issued with a NSW provisional rider licence.
If you fail you must obtain a NSW learner rider licence .
