If you come to live in NSW from another Australian State or Territory and have a current rider licence that is the equivalent to a NSW provisional or unrestricted rider licence, you can transfer your interstate licence to a NSW licence free of charge. The NSW rider licence will be issued to the expiry date of the interstate or internal territory licence up to a maximum of five years.
If you have a current interstate or internal territory learner rider licence and you take up residence in NSW you may apply for either a NSW provisional rider licence or a NSW learner rider licence.
If you have held your motorcycle rider licence for less than 12 months, you will receive a NSW provisional P1 rider licence.
To obtain a NSW learner rider licence you will need to:
- Be at least 16 years and 9 months of age or older.
- Take your interstate or internal territory photo learner rider licence to an RTA motor registry or agency.
- Provide proof of identity.
- Provide proof of residential address.
- Complete an application form.
- Pass an eyesight test.
- Have your photo taken.
You will then be issued with a NSW learner rider licence.
Whilst you are not required to attend pre-learner rider training you will be required to attend pre-provisional training once you have held a learner rider licence for a minimum of three months (unless you qualify for Mature Age exemption).
If you wish to apply for a NSW provisional rider licence instead of a NSW learner rider licence you will need to:
If you pass the Motorcycle Operator Skills Test (or Rider Driving Test outside a declared area) you will be issued with a NSW provisional rider licence.
If you fail you must obtain a NSW learner rider licence .
