To avoid delays and to improve safety in the Sydney Harbour Tunnel, new traffic lights and tunnel safety cameras are now in operation at the northern entrance to the Sydney Harbour Tunnel.
The cameras have been introduced due to:
- An increase in the number of incidences involving overheight vehicles attempting to enter the tunnel.
- Some motorists ignoring red lights and warning signs to stop and not enter the tunnel in the event of a tunnel closure.
Failure to stop at a red light can have very serious implications and can cause:
- Safety issues
- Delays in the tunnel
- Tunnel closures
When an overheight vehicle illegally enters the tunnel this can cause additional impacts such as:
- Traffic congestion
- Long delays
- Damage to the tunnel requiring expensive repairs for which drivers may be liable
All motorists should observe the warning signs and stop if the traffic lights are red.
Following a two month grace period, motorists caught running a red light may incur a fine and demerit points.
