Heavy vehicles, because of the long distances they travel and their large size and mass compared to other vehicles, present a significant road safety challenge.
Because heavy truck drivers are professional drivers and part of the commercial chain delivering goods, there are reasons why heavy truck drivers display behaviour that is different from other road users. As a result, the ways of improving safety may also differ from those for private vehicles.
It is in this context that the Heavy Vehicle Safety Issues and Countermeasure publication was developed in 2003.
