Heavy vehicle regulations

Driver in truck cab

The RTA is accountable for ensuring that everyone using NSW roads does so safely, while still allowing the transport industry to operate as efficiently as possible. The RTA promotes roadworthy vehicles and responsible behaviour by all road users.

One way to achieve this is by regularly inspecting heavy vehicles operating on NSW roads to see that they meet safety and roadworthiness standards and that their drivers are complying with national standards, federal and state law. Regulation of drivers and vehicles is crucial in preventing road crashes. By checking that truck loads are within legal mass limits, damage to NSW roads and bridges is minimised.

Officers of the RTA, NSW Police Service and the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) are authorised under the law to intercept and inspect certain vehicles.

Some Council Officers are also authorised to intercept and conduct regulation checks on vehicles operating on Local Government and main roads within their local government area.
