Inspection Reports are valid for three months from the date of issue and will be provided for each inspection.
Important:
You must arrange to have a HVIS inspection within the three months before the expiry date of your registration. Your inspection should take place as early as possible within the three months to prevent delays in the processing of your renewal, preferably at least two months before the renewal date.
Inspection reports issued more than three months before the date of registration renewal will not be accepted and you must undertake another inspection at your own cost.
Failed inspections and defect clearance
If your vehicle does not meet the roadworthiness requirements at the time of inspection it will fail.
A vehicle will not pass an inspection until the necessary repairs specified on the Defect Notice have been cleared at a Heavy Vehicle Authorised Inspection Station (HVAIS).
The cleared Defect Notice must then be presented to the RTA for the vehicle to be recorded as passing the annual inspection. Registration renewal can then proceed.
If repairs take longer than the time provided on the Defect Notice you will need to contact the RTA’s Technical Enquiries Branch on 1300 137 302. Failure to do so may result in your vehicle registration being suspended and possibly cancelled.
Suspension and cancellation of registration if an HVIS inspection is not undertaken
It is a requirement by law that heavy vehicles and public passenger vehicles have an HVIS inspection prior to registration. If you are unable to have an HVIS inspection before registration renewal, you can renew the registration if you provide an HVAIS report. However, you must also obtain an HVIS inspection within 28 days of renewal, otherwise your registration will be suspended and possibly cancelled.
If you cannot obtain a booking for an HVIS inspection within the time specified, you will need to contact the Customer Service Centre on 1300 364 847.
