The Federal Interstate Registration Scheme (FIRS) provides an alternative to
State-based registration for heavy vehicles weighing more than 4.5 tonnes, and
engaged solely in interstate operations. The RTA administers FIRS in NSW on
behalf of the Australian Government.
How do I register under FIRS?
To register your vehicle under FIRS, you must attend a motor registry in person
and provide the following:
- A completed Application for Registration form (RTA form 1009)
- A completed Description of Heavy Vehicle/Trailer form (RTA form 1120)
- A completed Declaration of Eligibility for a Registration Concession (RTA form 1193)
- An RTA HVIS inspection report proving the vehicle’s roadworthiness (see Related links, above right)
- Evidence of a Compulsory Third Party (CTP) policy covering the registration period.
What fees and charges apply?
FIRS vehicles are subject to national heavy vehicle charges. See FIRS NTC charges, in the Related links box, for more information.
Can I change my NSW-registered vehicle to FIRS?
Yes, any operator of a NSW-registered heavy vehicle with a GVM of more than 4.5 tonnes who wants to use the vehicle solely for interstate trade or commerce can apply for FIRS registration.
You must surrender your NSW number plates and establish a new FIRS registration for the vehicle. See How do I register under FIRS, above, for the requirements.
Note: If the vehicle has been inspected by an RTA/HVIS for a NSW registration within the last three months, an additional inspection is not required.
FIRS vehicles are exempt from stamp duty.
Renewing a FIRS registration
FIRS-registered vehicles may be renewed in person at a motor registry, online at myRTA.com or by phone using the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system.
You may renew a FIRS vehicle for quarterly, half-yearly, or annual registration periods.
