Load Restraint Guide

Load Restraint Guide second edition cover image.

The safe loading of vehicles is vitally important in preventing injury to people and damage to property. There are economic benefits to all if the load arrives at its destination intact and without damage.

The transport of commercial loads by heavy vehicles on NSW roads is governed by the Road Transport (Mass Loading and Access) Regulation 2005. The purpose of the regulation is to provide a framework to ensure consistency for regulating vehicle and combinations mass and loading within Australia.

Following feedback from the road transport industry, the LRG was entirely reformatted. It is now published in colour and is more user friendly. While the LRG is particularly relevant for drivers and operators, it is also useful for vehicle designers and other participants in the transport chain.

The LRG continues to provide basic safety principles and details the performance standards that should be followed for the safe carriage of loads on road vehicles. It also offers clarity on technical complexities and general principles, and how to test load restraint systems.

The 2004 Load Restraint Guide is now available from Motor Registries or by phoning 13 22 13.

More information on the LRG is available from the National Transport Commission of Australia website.
