It’s a sad fact that motor vehicle and traffic accidents account for more than half of all reported spinal cord injuries in Australia.
Most spinal cord injuries are permanent and life changing and the most common age group to have a spinal cord injury is young people aged between 15-24.
After a spinal cord injury, it may take a year or more before the person can leave hospital.
Even then, the journey is not easy. People with newly acquired spinal cord injuries may have to find a new and accessible place to live, and/or require assistance with activities they used to take for granted, such as getting out of bed, showering, toileting and shopping. In addition, there may be ongoing health, adjustment and social issues to contend with.
So think about what can happen before you get in the car. Remember to keep to the speed limit, don’t drink and drive and always wear a seatbelt – it may just save you from a long term spinal cord injury.
