In addition to the mandatory release of certain government information, the RTA is authorised under section 7(1) of the GIPA Act to make any government information held by the agency publicly available unless there is an overriding public interest against public disclosure of the information.

The RTA produces a wide range of publications to assist customers to promote road safety and new technology and to fulfill statutory requirements under annual reporting, environmental and freedom of information legislation pre-1 July 2010 and the GIPA Act from 1 July 2010.
Publications on driver licensing, vehicle registration and road safety are available free from motor registries.
Technical and AUSTROADS publications are available for sale from the RTA Library Services at Level 3, 27 Argyle Street, Parramatta NSW 2150 Ph: 8849 2913. The library's collection of books, journals and CD-ROMs includes extensive coverage in the areas of road and bridge engineering, road safety, environment and management.
