The NSW Roadside Environment Committee was formed in 1994 to encourage better management of the roadside environment. It comprises 12 organisations, including the RTA, with interests in roadside management.
The RTA-supported committee encourages better management of roadside ecological, social and economic resources. The involvement and cooperation of Government agencies and other groups within the community is essential for effective roadside management.
The Roadside Environment Committee:
Has produced an information package Managing Roadsides containing publications and a video.
The package assists roadside managers in assessing the value of the roadside environment, and developing and implementing management plans.
Distributes roadside signage to highlight areas of significance.
Develops and runs training workshops and courses.
Carries out research and highlights issues affecting roadsides.
Manages an Environmental Trust program – Saving our corridors – that funds local authorities to assist with assessment and planning.
Has produced a Strategic Plan (2003-2006) to encourage a coordinated effort by all stakeholders and managers of roadsides and to protect the diverse range of roadside values.
The following vision and goal are part of the plan:
Vision – to achieve a consistent and high quality of biodiversity and vegetation management on linear reserves (or roadsides) in NSW.
Goal – to improve and enhance the management of roadsides in NSW through the engagement of community and key stakeholders.
