Reducing and minimising impacts of road traffic noise

The RTA’s management of road traffic noise is an important issue as traffic growth continues. The RTA works to provide efficient road transport infrastructure while limiting the noise from traffic and individual vehicles.

The management of road traffic noise is a major factor in road planning and the management of vehicles. The RTA's approach to minimising the impacts of road traffic noise is demonstrated by:

  • The RTA's Environmental Noise Management Manual.
  • Implementing the RTA's Noise Abatement Program.

The manual details the RTA’s approach to minimising noise from road building, maintenance and operation, from traffic and individual vehicles.

Mitigation options available under the noise abatement program include noise walls or mounds, architectural treatments and low noise pavement on State and federal roads.
