The RTA's corporate commitment to environmental heritage is embodied in its Policy for the Management of Heritage Items:
To ensure that the Authority identifies and takes appropriate action in relation to all heritage items which it affects; that the Authority identifies and manages all heritage items which it owns or for which it has care and control; and that the heritage significance of the Authority's assets is established and maintained; in accordance with the requirements of relevant NSW and Federal legislation.
RTA Thematic History
This document (available in the document box below) describes the history of NSW road departments, road and bridge network, vehicle regulation and licensing of drivers, traffic management and safety. The Thematic History was written in 1996 as part of the Heritage Office requirements to establish the RTA Heritage and Conservation Register (S.170 Register).
RTA Heritage and Conservation Register
The RTA Heritage and Conservation Register is established in accordance with Section 170 of the Heritage Act, 1977 to record all the heritage items in the ownership or under the control of the RTA.
The RTA Heritage and Conservation Register has two main roles:
- To meet the RTA's statutory requirements
As an essential tool in total asset management, by listing and providing information on those RTA assets which have heritage significance.
Information in the Register has been prepared according to NSW Heritage Office guidelines and corresponds with information in the State Heritage Inventory, maintained by the NSW Heritage Office. You will find the level of information will vary for different items. It is intended eventually that all items will have full heritage information in line with NSW Heritage Office guidelines.
RTA Heritage Guidelines
The RTA Heritage Guidelines are based on the RTA's Strategic Plan, and have been prepared to assist staff who are involved in planning and environmental assessment of activities, property management & information and road & bridge asset maintenance.
