Greenhouse gases

To meet the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the potential impacts of climate change the RTA has compiled an inventory of its greenhouse gas emissions. The inventory covers emissions produced directly from its activities, as well as the embodied emissions found in several materials used in construction.

A greenhouse gas reduction plan is being formulated to identify opportunities to reduce the RTA’s energy use (electricity and fuel) and the use of high energy intensity materials. The RTA will undertake another greenhouse gas inventory in approximately five years. The effectiveness of the greenhouse gas reduction plan is expected to be demonstrated by the next inventory.

A climate change risk assessment is also being developed to identify significant risk to the road network from climate change.

RTA Greenhouse Gas Inventory

The RTA’s Greenhouse Gas Inventory (GGI) identifies the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions - both direct and indirect - from RTA activities. It identifies greenhouse gas emissions from energy use associated with buildings, street lighting, traffic signals, fuel consumption and indirect emissions from construction materials including cement, bitumen and steel. It does not include energy use by contractors or energy consumed as part of the transport task as these are outside of the direct control of the RTA.

The findings of the GGI are being addressed by two working parties - one to address direct emissions of greenhouse gases, and the other addressing indirect emissions produced from construction materials. The direct emissions working party has formulated a list of actions designed to reduce emissions from energy consumption in buildings, street lighting and traffic signals. The indirect working party will consider ways to reduce RTA’s use of high intensity embodied emission materials.
