Reducing the impact of road transport on air quality

Roads and Maritime Services is committed to improving air quality by effectively managing the NSW roads and traffic system. We are working on a range of cleaner air initiatives to improve vehicle and fuel standards, reduce vehicle emissions and to promote greener transport alternatives.

Even though motor vehicle emissions have reduced the last 20 years air quality remains an issue and we will continue to work towards reducing vehicle emissions and supporting initiatives that keep our air clean.

2012 M5 East Air Quality Improvement Program

The 2012 M5 East Air Quality Improvement Program aims at reducing the number of smoky vehicles using the tunnel. The key component of this program is the increase in enforcement fines and penalties for commercial vehicles using the M5 East Tunnel.

RMS is also offering commercial vehicle owners the option to have a diesel retrofit device installed on their vehicles whereby the government will subsidise half of the supply and installation cost of the device.
