Biodiversity

Tree

Biodiversity is the variety of life forms, including different plants and animals and the genes they contain and the ecosystems in which they live. Australian ecosystems contain many species found nowhere else in the world. Ecosystem processes regulate air, soil and water quality, and maintain soil fertility.

The RTA and Local Government are responsible for maintaining the roadside environment for most of the roads in NSW. The RTA manages biodiversity at all stages of its road projects including planning, design, construction and maintenance.  The RTA has many mechanisms to protect biodiversity including Environmental Impact Assessment, stringent environmental specifications, regular environmental audits and inspections of construction sites and environmental awareness training for RTA staff and council workers.

Detailed information on the RTA’s work to protect biodiversity, including threatened species recovery plans can be found in the RTA’s annual report and annual environment report.
