Biodiversity guidelines

The RTA’s Environment Branch is preparing biodiversity guidelines to assist in conserving biodiversity. Preparation of the guidelines has been undertaken in line with both National and State biodiversity strategies. The guidelines will include a brief description of legislation relating to biodiversity and the relationship between the biodiversity guidelines and other RTA policy. The guidelines will assist project managers, environment staff and any other staff involved in work where biodiversity is of concern.

The guidelines will cover:

  • Survey guidelines for flora and fauna investigations.
  • REF/EIS detail: what to expect in the EIA process.
  • Access to data such as the NPWS Atlas of NSW Wildlife Data, GIPSICAM.
  • Pesticides: insecticide and herbicide use.
  • Wetlands: their importance, processes and restoration.
  • Fisheries and fish friendly road planning, design and construction.
  • Vegetation management including revegetation, weeds, noxious weeds and regeneration, trimming.
  • Compensatory habitat and offsets policy.
  • Underpass and overpass policy.
    Research and development: results from investigations into potential ameliorative measures.
  • Ecologically sustainable development.
  • Responsibilities under the Rural Fires Act.
