Bicycles

Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) develops and implements the Government's bicycle policy and strategies in consultation with the wider community and stakeholders.

Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) manages and delivers Roads and Maritime Services' (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) Bicycle Program and reports against the bicycle infrastructure delivered by the whole of Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority).

Roads and Maritime Services' (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) bicycle program assists Councils across NSW through joint funding, to develop Council bike plans and implement associated local bicycle networks. Refer to the Memorandum of Understanding for program details.

Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) provides advice to internal and external customers on current policies, standards and guidelines for bicycle facilities to ensure consistency in the delivery of bicycle infrastructure throughout NSW.

Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) promotes cycling as a healthy, easy, low cost and environmentally friendly alternative to driving for short trips in local communities.

Strategies to promote cycling include:

  • Developing strategies to enhance bicycle use, mobility and access.
  • Supporting bicycle safety through the development of educational and promotional campaign materials.
  • Supporting bicycle usage by encouraging Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) staff and community participation in bicycle events supported by Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority).
  • Planning and developing resources relating to bicycle facility training, mobility and accessibility.
  • Conducting research on bicycle facility usage to aid in the development of future strategies.
  • Providing administrative, technical and policy support to the Bicycle Advisory Council.
  • Providing advice on policy issues to the Government, Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority), other government agencies, external bodies including AustRoads and Australian Bicycle Council, local government and bicycle groups.
