Southern Region
Summary
Southern Region covers the Illawarra, Shoalhaven, South Coast and Southern Highlands of NSW, extending from Wollongong and Wollondilly local government areas (LGA) in the north, to Upper Lachlan LGA and the ACT in the west, to the Victorian border in the South, and including the Snowy Mountains. More than 95 per cent of the region is classified as rural.
Southern Region manages 2395 km of State Roads and National Highways network and also administers funding for maintenance and rehabilitation carried out by councils on 1655 km of Regional Roads. The region is responsible for 672 bridges and 218 sets of traffic signals. Approximately 620,000 people live in the region with more than 500,000 registered vehicles. Southern Region acts as the single point of contact for the 15 Councils across the Region. The Region interacts with Councils in the following areas:
- State Roads – Road Maintenance Council Contracts
- Regional Roads – Block Grant Agreement, REPAIR Program, Regional Roads Timber Bridge Partnership
- Road Safety & Traffic Management Programs
- Traffic Committees
- Regional Consultative Committee
