Services for the hearing and speech impaired

For customers who are deaf or have hearing impairments, the RTA provides the following services:

  • A tele-typewriter has been installed at RTA Contact Centre.
The tele-typewriter can be accessed by other tele-typewriter users. Customers who are totally deaf and who have tele-typewriter can conduct conversations with staff via the phone lines using their typewriter keyboards. The phone number is 1800 331 412.
  • Audio induction loops have been installed in all RTA motor registries.
The audio loop system is used to help our customers who use a hearing aid. The audio loop system allows registry staff to communicate with you in a normal manner and also assists you by eliminating the majority of background noise. The audio loop is only suitable for customers who have a hearing aid with a 'T' switch. To make the loop work you must switch your hearing aid to the 'T' position.
  • Assistance in obtaining an Auslan interpreter for deaf applicants who wish to undertake a road rules knowledge test for a drivers licence.
The RTA will arrange for the request for an interpreter to be sent to the NSW Community Relations Commission and will pay the fee for the interpreter service. Further information can be obtained from any RTA motor registry.
