Urban design in the RTA

The RTA is committed to achieving good urban design outcomes from all infrastructure projects for which it is responsible.

Urban design considers:

  • The relationship between roads and the urban and rural environments through which they pass.
  • The location and form of the road itself.
  • The integrated design of all systems of movement within the road corridor.
  • The movement experience for users.

The RTA’s Urban Design section, located within the Road Network Infrastructure Directorate, is responsible for urban design outcomes across the Authority and works closely with RTA Development Managers, Project Managers and their teams.

Beyond the Pavement

The Authority’s high-level urban design policy and guidelines are set out in the documents:

  • Beyond the Pavement 2004 Update, which should be read first; and
  • Beyond the Pavement: RTA Urban and Regional Design Practice Notes, December 1999, covering urban design outcomes sought by the RTA, project management process to achieve urban design outcomes, urban design issues and principles, and current RTA case studies.

A hard copy of Beyond the Pavement is available from the RTA Library for $77. Please phone (02) 8849 2913 or email library@rta.nsw.gov.au

Detailed urban design advice and guidelines

The RTA has developed a series of technical directions and detailed guidelines to assist in the application of the high-level guidelines contained in Beyond the Pavement and to address specific issues being encountered.
