Urban design in the RTA

The RTA is committed to achieving good urban design outcomes from all infrastructure projects for which it is responsible. This means

  • Road projects and the networks of which they are a part must fit sensitively with the built, natural and community environments through which they pass, in both urban and rural locations.
  • Road planning and design must contribute to the accessibility and connectivity of communities and a general permeability of movement through areas by all modes of movement, including walking and cycling.
  • The design and management of roads must contribute to the overall quality of the public domain for the community, including road users.

The RTA’s Urban Design Section, located within the Major Infrastructure Directorate, is responsible for urban design outcomes across the Authority and works closely with RTA Development Managers, Project Managers and their teams.

Beyond the Pavement

The Authority’s high-level urban design policy and guidelines are set out in the documents:

  • Beyond the Pavement: RTA urban design policy, procedures and design principles; and
  • Bridge Aesthetics, Noise Wall design Guideline, Shotcrete Guideline, Landscape Guideline.

A hard copy of these documents are available from the RTA Library for a charge. Please phone (02) 8849 2913 or email library@rta.nsw.gov.au

Detailed urban design advice and guidelines

The RTA has developed a series of technical directions and detailed guidelines to assist in the application of the high-level guidelines contained in Beyond the Pavement and to address specific issues being encountered.

RTA achievements in road design

A book has been prepared to showcase some of the RTA's road infrastructure achievements of recent years.

The quality of these projects demonstrates the commitment of the organisation and the NSW Government to integrating engineering with urban design.
