Protecting the environment

The Old Windsor Road and Windsor Road route was built in the 1790s and continues to be used as the main route between Parramatta and Windsor. Significant parts of the route currently retain a "country" setting and feel; with views across rural land, roadside post and rail fences, vegetation and historic buildings.

The State Government recognises the historic importance of this road corridor, and is committed to preserving both its heritage value and the natural environment. The RTA works closely with local councils, residents, community groups and local Aboriginal land councils, as well as the Department of Environment and Conservation, the Department of Planning, the NSW Heritage Office, and other government departments and agencies to minimise any impacts during construction.

Some environmental initiatives include:

  • Retaining the character of the sections of Old Windsor Road between Meurants Lane and Norbrik; and Sunnyholt Road and Caddies Creek, which will be used by the Parramatta to Rouse Hill bus T-way.
  • A deviation of Windsor Road at Rouse Hill to enhance and preserve the heritage significance of Rouse Hill estate, Rouse Hill School and Rouse Hill Regional Park.
  • Constructing a flood evacuation route across South Creek to provide Windsor residents additional time to evacuate in the event of a major flood.

The RTA uses a comprehensive range of measures to revegetate project areas once construction is completed. Where possible, this includes using flora species native to the area, such as Cumberland Plain Woodland trees that feature along sections of the route.
